The court reporting industry currently faces a shortage of court reporters. Some of the factors contributing to this shortage cannot be controlled, but others can be addressed and remedied. For instance, we at Connor Reporting can’t change the fact that the average age of a court reporter is on the rise. We can, however, increase our efforts to educate young prospects and raise awareness about the many advantages of pursuing a career in court reporting.
Legal video technology is increasingly used to streamline and enhance litigation. Court reporting firms must offer multiple video services (videoconferencing, video depositions, day-in-the-life video, video synchronization) to meet the standards of the industry and the needs of their clients. The legal field presents an exciting career possibility for many. However, some individuals may not want to invest in law school and become a lawyer. For these individuals there are several other legal positions available, including that of a paralegal or a legal assistant. Although the terms “paralegal” and “legal assistant” were once used interchangeably, they now refer to two different professions. In recent years, “legal assistant” has more commonly replaced the title “legal secretary” in law firms. Court records have been migrating from paper to electronic formats for several years now. This shift toward electronic filing, or e-filing, enables legal professionals to easily submit documents to multiple court systems and reduces court costs. In 2014, the Indiana Supreme Court announced the implementation of an e-filing system, allowing cases to be filed entirely online. This system is currently up-and-running in more than half of all Indiana courts and is anticipated to be statewide by the end of 2018. Technology developed for computer-aided translation (CAT) software allows for the simultaneous digital audio recording of judicial proceedings, often referred to as audio synchronization or backup audio media (BAM).
